    "The Mount Isa Centre for Rural & Remote Health (MICRRH) is interested in your opinion on topical Indigenous, Rural & Remote Heath issues. For this purpose, we have created a web-blog, aptly named “Dialog”. "Dialog" is a moderated forum.  The blog can be accessed directly at http://micrrh-dialog.blogspot.com/  or through MICRRH website, http://www.micrrh.jcu.edu.au.  . We would like to receive your views and thoughts on the topic(s) discussed in “Dialog”  through active participation in this blog.  We ask people to self moderate their language as this is public forum and would also ask that people participating in this forum treat each other respectfully in the interests of rational dialogue and discussion.  Your views will be taken into account in our academic and research activities, which includes providing advice on service delivery to various health service planners and service providers nationally.  We also welcome any suggestions for future topics which can be emailed to us on micrrh@jcu.edu.au   
  • NPS topic - "Treatment choices for menopausal symptoms"
    Our NPS Facilitators, Kristen Anderson and Howard Punchard, have started visiting on the new NPS topic “Treatment choices for menopausal symptoms”. Menopause can be a hot topic for many women and if you want to discuss current evidence for treating menopausal symptoms contact the Health Workforce Queensland QUM team on 07 3105 7800 to book an individual visit by your skilled facilitators.
    General Practice Nurses and pharmacists are also invited to participate in this topic.
    This latest program focuses on:
     Discussing the most effective treatment for women with menopausal symptoms
     Understanding the potential benefits and harms of prescribing oestrogen, with or without progestogen
     Considering the use of oestrogens and progestogens for the shortest duration and lowest effective dosage
     Discussing efficacy and safety in the use of complementary and alternative medicines

    This professional development training is for health and youth/community professionals wanting to increase their skills and knowledge in non-directive pregnancy options counselling.
    The topics covered include:
    • Evidence-based information on all options: abortion, adoption and parenting;
    • Language and strategies to use in non-directive, unbiased counselling;
    • Experiential activities to develop best-practice counselling skills;
    • Exploring issues and values, decision-making and coping with decisions;
    • Legal aspects of pregnancy termination, including medical abortion.

    Conference – Working Towards Closing the Gap in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People’s Health and Well Being - Wednesday 26 & Thursday 27 May 2010
    Workshop – Improving the Health and Well Being of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Young Parents and Their Infants - Friday 28 May 2010
    The Child Health and Safety Unit of Queensland Health is hosting an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander maternal, child and youth health conference on Wednesday 26 and Thursday 27 May 2010 in Brisbane. The theme of the conference is using research to enhance clinical practice and service delivery to close the gap in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people’s health. This will be followed by a one day workshop focussing on identifying strategies to improve the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young pregnant women, young parents and their infants on Friday, 28 May 2010.
    The conference is aimed at Queensland Health and non-government organisations, particularly midwives, child health nurses and Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Health Workers, doctors, allied health staff and service managers who deliver services to pregnant and parenting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people. Following the conference there will be a one day workshop (Friday, 28 May, 2010) on working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young parents.
    There is an upper limit of 150 participants for the conference and 60 participants in the workshop. As there are limited places for the workshop priority will be given to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers, midwives and child health nurses who work with young Indigenous parents.
    Further information on the Conference program, venue and the registration process will be disseminated in due course.
