Legislation
The legislation underpinning Victim Assist Queensland is the Victims of Crime Assistance Act 2009. A copy of the legislation is available on the Victim Assist Queensland website at www.justice.qld.gov.au.
Definition of an act of Violence
A crime or series of related crimes, whether committed by one or more persons, that has occurred in Queensland and directly resulted in the death or injury (physical or psychological) to one or more persons.
Categories of Victims
Primary victim - a person directly injured by the act of violence
Related victim - a close relative to primary victim who has died as a result of an act of violence
Parent secondary victim - is a parent of a child who is injured as a direct result of the act being committed against the child; and is injured as a direct result of becoming aware of the act
Witness secondary victim - a witness to an act of violence
Access to financial assistance
Victims no longer need to await the court process to apply for financial assistance. Once an act of violence has been reported to QPS or for special primary victims (Section 81(2)) the report can be made to their doctor, counsellor or registered psychologist.

- Packing your purpose-built vaccine refrigerator
• Vaccines can be stored in shallow plastic baskets/trays clearly labelled with the name(s) of vaccine(s)
• Allow space between baskets/trays for air circulation
• Some purpose-built vaccine refrigerators have a cooling plate. If this is the case, ensure there is a gap of at least 4cm between the vaccines and the back of the refrigerator
• Keep the door closed as much as practical
• Place a sticker on the fridge door reminding GPs and staff to only open the door when required
• Always leave vaccines in their original packaging—do not remove from the box to fit more in the refrigerator
• Cool the refrigerator before stocking with vaccine
• Don’t overstock the refrigerator with vaccines—allow air to circulate
• If there is a small amount of stock in the refrigerator, place bottles of salt water or unfrozen ice packs/gel packs to help stabilise the temperature
- Mount Isa: Miles Street Centre Update
NWQPHC’s Miles Street Centre now have 2 x fulltime psychologists.
Under the funding guidelines, clients can be seen once a Mental Health Care Plan (MBS item 2710) has been claimed.
The Miles St referral form covers all MBS requirements as a MH care plan.
Tammie Olm-Madden, Miles St Centre Psychologist says:
“So far some clients have waited up to a month, and we currently have around 25 people waiting. While we are making every effort to meet client’s best interests by seeing them as needed, GP’s can speed up the process by doing the appropriate paperwork (i.e., a Mental Health Care Plan 2710). We are happy to take calls regarding new referrals for whom the GPs are especially concerned (47492018).
GP’s should make sure that patients are aware of the option of going to the emergency department at the hospital if they are considering suicide or self-harm.”
